Mike is best remembered in Bollington for having brought the RNCM Jazz Collective, their big band for first and second year students, to the last three Festivals. Whilst at the College he encouraged fine young musicians, many of whom have gone on to make careers for themselves in the world of jazz. Most notable of these around this neck of the woods, is ‘our own’ Amy Roberts who went on to be the only woman ever to play in the Chris Barber Band.
Following his retirement from the College, he has assembled this octet of like-minded musicians to play his own melodic arrangements of some of the music from the Bebop era and the Great American Songbook. Their regular alto sax player is unavailable for the gig, but Mike has persuaded his long-time friend and collaborator Alan Barnes to deputise. Alan has, over the years, been the recipient of more jazz awards than there is room for here, and it will be a delight to welcome him back.
