Bollington Festival Choir is a friendly and long established group giving three concerts a year at its home in the Arts Centre or at St Oswald’s Church, plus three other annual events: a Public Singing Day, a Carol Service, and Messiah for All which raises thousands of pounds for local charities.
Whether you’re an experienced singer or just fancy joining a choir, this is your chance to try it out, after which there are no auditions to join, just an annual subscription and a commitment to attend as many rehearsals as you can.
The first concert of the new season and the first music we’ll be rehearsing, includes two very attractive works: Christmas Folk Masses by Marc Antoine Charpentier and by Edmund Pascha. They were inspired by their native French and Czech folk music. Charpentier sets exclusively the Latin Mass texts to traditional carol melodies, while Pascha his own folk-inspired settings, adding a Christmas narrative whose Czech words conductor Donald Judge has translated into English.
Rehearsals will culminate in a concert at St Oswald’s on Sunday 1 December, with an orchestra of strings, recorders, and continuo.
The images show the Choir painted by local artist Nola McGaul, a Czech Folk Nativity (photo, Donald Judge) and an image from a wayside shrine in Czechia with the inscription form the Mass Kyrie Eleison (Lord have mercy.)
